HB 606

I introduced House Bill 161 to end the issuance of drivers’ license to undocumented immigrants. This legislation was tabled in House Labor Committee. I am the co-sponsor of House Bill 606. HB 606 is"compromise legislation” allowing a two tiered drivers’ license system. HB 606 allows a full drivers’ license—real ID compliant—for legal residents and naturalized citizens. The second tier is the"dream act exceptions” allowing persons born in the US, or brought her as young children seeking legal immigration status seeking legal immigration status to have driving privileges with yearly renewed. The second tier does not allow the holder to board aircraft. Tonight the House Labor Committee tabled HB 606. 72% of all New Mexico residents want our current law changed. This appears to be the end of this year’s House efforts to change current law. Maybe the Senate can start the change.
