UNM Hospital and Bern Co indigent heathcare tax

Tonight I testified before the Bernalillo County Commission. I discussed the number one complaint in my district—high taxes. If you examine your property tax bill about 20% is for UNM Hospital indigent healthcare. Now the facts, 25% of UNM’s patients are indigent and come from the entire state accounting for about $140 million in actual care costs. The other 75% have health insurance. Bernalillo County gives UNM Hospital $90 million per year, the Federal government gives over $22 million in DSH funds, and the State budget provides over $6 million. We in Bernalillo County are funding the State wide indigent health care as each year UNM boasts a $70 to $80 million profit, with an average of $30 million in capital improvement per year, yearly providing millions of dollars to other counties for indigent healthcare and now UNM Hospital has announced they have over $200 million cash in the bank. It is time for UNM to reduce the Bernalillo County mil levy!
